Kaempfen and Hieronymi in Zurich, Switzerland, it was bought by its first owner, racer Hans Staerkle, Basel. He raced it successfully as a sidecar outfit in hillclimbs and roadraces in Switzerland.
He sold it to Mr. Amrein from Basel, who had it converted to road use on public roads by the Vincent Works in Stevenage. 1955, it was sold again to Mr. Duffner from Weil am Rhein, where the Black Lightning stayed until 1961, thereafter sold to Mr. Kuttler, who took it apart 1966 after some damage. Its present owner, Ernst Hegeler of Varel, Germany bought it in
bits 1968, rebuilt it and used it as a road bike in traffic over 40 years until 1999, when he rebuilt it to original race trim, riding it on vintage events on demoruns.
Its only deviation from ex-delivery status are the Girdraulic forks, which were installed shortly after purchase. The original Bramton Girder is still present. You will also find a kickstarter fitted, which normally does not belong to a Black Lightning, as it is much more easy to start it in the paddocks like that. For better starting, 32mm BING carbs are fitted. (original AMAL GP´s are still there)
Its youthful rider is getting 76, this year.
Ernst Hegler´s Comet Racer, manufactured 1948. One of three ( others are short stroke 500cc and Big bore 600cc). All being raced until today.
